  • Coach Bob

I went to Deland because I love to row and wanted to get back on the water during the winter. Frankly, having a coach can be intimidating, but I’m a convert! Coach Bob gives clear advice that I found easy to translate into action (well, ok, I did occasionally “slide” into old habits), and is one of the most pleasant, patient and upbeat people I’ve ever met. It is a total luxury rowing on that gorgeous water and not worrying about what’s behind you. His quiet little launch and arm signals kept going us steady along the St Johns and through the narrow cut-through to Blue Springs, rollin on the river.

I can’t wait to go back! I hope when I start up again rowing this spring I’ll hear his voice in my head, “push with your legs, wrist straight, NICE!!”

  • Bob: I wanted to thank you so much for the great experience you gave Gretchen and I last week in Florida. The rowing was wonderful. For me personally, I know I have never rowed so well and I am very excited about improving and possibly racing this year. It is crazy to think I have been rowing for 7 years but only "going through the motions" and not really moving the boat. Your sharp eye saw that immediately but, best of all, you were able to communicate how to correct it in a way that I understood. I'm amazed at how quickly I got the boat moving after that! It was thrilling to travel down the river so fast! (That is why I didn't stick around and got stuck in the salad; just too much fun to go fast - sorry!).

Also, you treated us like royalty with the home cooked meals and private training. We will be eternally grateful and plan to return soon.

  • Bob,
I wanted to say thank you so much for helping the girls in the quad last season. Paige says you are the sculling expert and she truly appreciated the time you spent with them helping improve their technique. Hopefully she will be able to scull again in the spring.
    Thanks again.

  • Robert,
I wanted to write a note concerning the Learn2row camp you gave 2 weekends ago. Since I started rowing at a later age I am harder to teach and had preconceived ideas derived from sweep rowing. I had tried to pick sculling on my own, but I had not been able to become proficient in a single. You spent 2 half days and 1 full day instructing the 4 of us novices (or less) and made us proficient such that I am comfortable rowing a single. I picked up enough to correct bad habits I created trying to teach myself. It gave me the basis to improve my rowing skills. The weekend following the camp I went out in the quad with 3 experienced rowers and had a good day.
    Thanks

  • First I want to say thanks for holding a great sculling clinic in Columbus!

I found the coaching and attention to detail was exceptional, I felt relaxed when applying the drills that you had us do, especially after coming out of our ‘comfort zone’ and dropping certain aspects of our technique and re-learning and applying the correct technique in its place. I know this is quite difficult to do when you learn something but has been done it incorrectly many times over which creates bad habits in muscle memory.

My body posture has improved and I feel much more confident coming up on a controlled slide even at a higher stroke rate, while still maintaining a relaxed upper body and driving with the legs, coming out of the release quickly with fast hands and moving back up to the catch, in one comfortable movement linking all the phases of the stroke together with a good focus on the set and run of the boat. My technical performance has become cleaner and more mechanically driven. I feel that the blades come out of the water crisper and I drop them back into the water at the correct level. I’ve improved my hand heights feeling that they are more level while coming up the slide and overall I’m able to balance a single shell better, enjoying the run of the boat. I feel more responsive to the movements of a shell and the little adjustments that make it run smoothly.

These are comments coming from things that you have taught, my coaching here and being able to elaborate and constantly look for improvement.

I’m going to keep working on improvements and I’m always welcoming of feedback on my technique.

If you have video and/or comments I would very much appreciate and be interested in any feedback you might have on the drills that we performed.

Thank you again for your help and teaching.

  • One of Coach Bob's sayings was "You guys gotta look pretty". He would stick his pinky fingers out and wave his hands in and out slowly like he was rowing dainty minature oars. Kinda funny looking cause he's a barrel chested, bowling ball headed, mans' man. I never laughed though cause he was so serious.

Have to admit that I was a dubious when coach said "You're faster already". It felt like I was putzing around, trying to look "pretty" while trying to maintain an intense focus on posture, soft hands, synchronous catch and release and a really slow slide in between.

The proof is on the stopwatch. For the first time since before rowing camp, I timed a sprint on our lake. Focused on all the coaching items (above) and added a little power to the legs. Physically it felt like about 75-80% output. I was barely out of breath. Knocked 12 seconds off my best previous time!

Our course is 1,130 meters. When adjusted for 1,000 meters, the time was 4:37. Not competitive yet but headed in the right direction!

Headline: "Dude Summons His Inner (Rowing) Ballerina". Ha!
